Short Tail Versus Long Tail Keywords

Just in case you don’t know, this is a post in the Niche Site Profit Formula series. That series of posts where I go through the steps of building a profitable niche site empire. Anyway, there’s always been a debate over which keywords are better, short or long tail. I’m sure you’ve heard the term ‘content is king’, well that’s sort of true. Good content, the right keywords and solid link building wins the game. Content is in fact a very important factor in Google’s algorithm. More importantly, content that’s strategically created using a set of carefully selected keywords. If you choose the wrong keywords, your content and link building won’t even matter.

But there are a million and one articles out there that’ll teach you how to find profitable keywords. So what’s better, short tail or long tail keywords? A perfect mix of both. First, what the heck are short and long tail keywords? Short tail keywords, are basically really broad and generic keywords. Usually a short 3 word or less phrase. An example would be: mattress reviews. Then there are long tail keywords, which consist of 3 or more words. Long tail keywords are obviously longer and far more specific than short tail keywords. They can consist of anywhere between 3 and 10 words.
